SOLLICITEER DIRECT – DOW is looking for a talented & motivated Senior Research Specialist in our Plastics Processes & Circularity department. This role will provide expertise in materials science/engineering as a member of our Engineering Fundamentals R&D team, with a primary focus on materials specification, testing, and physical properties measurement. Due to the global nature of our R&D organization and projects aligned to this role, there is flexibility for this position to be filled from either of our Lake Jackson (TX, USA) or Terneuzen (NLD) locations.This role will be responsible for defining and conducting research related to material selection for a number of developmental projects in our Sustainability portfolio (advanced recycling, furnace electrification). Additionally, this role will support our fleet of global manufacturing assets in our Packaging & Specialty Plastics and Hydrocarbons businesses, by providing guidance on optimum operating conditions to address and improve long-term reliability issues, such as fouling/coking, corrosion, and physical failure. Primary duties will include evaluating current & alternative materials through literature review, modeling, designing and conducting lab experiments, and collaborating with external partners.The successful candidate will be a sought-after expert that expands our fundamental materials engineering understanding and works to develop novel technologies that further the company’s ambition to create innovative and sustainable materials science solutions to advance the world.Responsibilities / DutiesDefines and conducts research on projects using advanced knowledge of scientific principles, theory, and experimental design within a scientific discipline.Develops and implements technical solutions through hands-on experimentation and problem-solving for well-defined problems within a project area.Consistently applies the Scientific Method in planning and executing experimental plans and solving problems.Formulates hypotheses and develops experimental plans to test them.Develops models to simulate corrosion, thermodynamic equilibrium, and estimation of physical properties.Keeps current with developments in relevant technology areas.Serves as a peer coach and provides constructive advice on projects within the team.Proposes projects that are aligned to business strategies and objectives.Communicates appropriately to both internal and external audiences.Demonstrates a working knowledge of team alignment with R&D and Business goals.Required QualificationsMaster’s degree or PhD in Materials Science or Materials Engineering, with specialization in metallurgy/alloysAbility to work independently and drive projects to completionStrong interpersonal, communication and leadership skillsMust work effectively in multi-functional environment to understand, communicate, coordinate, and implement business objectivesDesire to learn and understand new technology and applicationsPreferred QualificationsPrior industrial/process experienceThermodynamic materials modeling; expertise in software packages like Thermo-Calc or similarExperience in data handling and statistical analyses – SOLLICITEER DIRECT
